Bighorn Sheep Project
January 31, 2020 4:00pm
We, the Three Affiliated Tribes Fish & Wildlife Division, were able to re-introduce 30 bighorn sheep into two areas within the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation on Tuesday. This was a historic project between the TAT Fish & Wildlife, ND Game & Fish, and KUIU. It is estimated that bighorn sheep have not had an established population roam the badlands areas within the reservation in over 150 years.
The sheep were captured in the Bear Paw Mountains on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation in Montana on Monday. The captured sheep were tested and verified to be healthy. North Dakota Game & Fish will work together with TAT Fish & Wildlife to maintain the health of the MHA herds. All the re-introduced sheep are GPS-collared so they can be monitored closely.
The first release took place Tuesday morning in Mandaree; 3 rams and 13 ewes were released. The second release took place early Tuesday afternoon where 2 rams and 13 ewes were released.
We would like to thank the combined efforts of all entities and persons who made this project possible. KUIU, North Dakota Game & Fish, MHA Tribal Business Council, and Chippewa Cree Tribe.
